Gift retail is a calendar business. Christmas hamper programmes are locked in May, Easter baskets in October, Mother's Day carriers in January. Miss the PO deadline and the retail shelf date slips — often past the point where the seasonal SKU still sells. This page is written for the buyer whose brief starts with "we need it to land before [specific date]" and works back from there.
What gift retailers ask for on this category
- Hamper carriers sized to the buyer's filler recipe. Gift retailers do not order baskets by shape; they order by internal packing volume so their hamper-assembly warehouse can fit the biscuit tins, wine bottles, and cosmetic sets exactly. HMD prices and sizes SKUs against the buyer's filler bill of materials, not against generic dimensions.
- Ribbon-ready shapes. Handled baskets that accept a wide satin or grosgrain ribbon across the handle without the ribbon slipping off. Rectangular baskets with a lip that holds a tied bow. Round shallow trays that dress with a decorative wrap. Details that seem cosmetic but drive assembly-line speed at the hamper filler.
- Private-label branding on the basket itself. Printed ribbon, sticker on the base, leather patch, or hangtag with the retailer or brand logo. Applied at HMD packing so the hamper filler receives ready-branded stock.
- Seasonal PO deadlines that hit the retail shelf date. Christmas hampers on shelf by mid-November, Easter baskets on shelf by mid-March, Mother's Day carriers on shelf by mid-April. Working back through hamper assembly, ocean transit, and production, that means firm POs by May, October, and January respectively.
- Small-run bridge orders when a seasonal SKU sells through faster than planned. A 200-piece air-freight top-up in November for a bestseller Christmas SKU is often more economical than losing the sale.

Hamper carrier sizing — why the internal volume matters more than the outer dimension
Gift retailers frequently receive baskets that photograph beautifully but do not fit the filler recipe. The bottle of Prosecco stands too tall for the basket sides; the box of biscuits does not sit flat against the round base; the cosmetic set slides around because the interior width is 2 cm wider than the box. Hamper assembly slows, the fill quality varies from unit to unit, and the retail SKU ends up looking inconsistent on the shelf.
HMD sizes hamper-carrier SKUs against the buyer's filler bill of materials at RFQ stage. Send the list of items that will go into the hamper (with their outer dimensions), and HMD returns a spec sheet with the internal packing dimensions matched. Where a standard SKU does not fit, HMD proposes a modified size — this is a custom size and adds 2 to 3 weeks for shape jig work, but avoids the assembly-line slowdown that a mis-sized standard would cause.
Corporate gifting — the year-round adjacency
Corporate gifting programmes (client thank-you hampers, employee welcome baskets, event gift bundles) share the design register of consumer gift retail but run year-round rather than seasonal. Typical corporate order profile: 500 to 3,000 pieces of one lidded amenity box or shallow gift tray, with the corporate brand applied at packing (printed ribbon or leather patch), delivered in one shipment 4 to 6 weeks after PO confirmation.
Corporate buyers are less price-sensitive and more spec-sensitive than seasonal retail. A consistent leather patch, a clean printed ribbon, and no visible weave defects on the pieces the client will see up close are the make-or-break details. HMD applies stricter than default QC (AQL 1.5 major) on corporate gifting orders as a baseline and includes the reserve inspection cost in the quoted unit price rather than as a surcharge.
